Unfortunately, the week goes by a bit too fast at times, so the whole project with the rundown on Lars Lind’s newest album has been put on ice because of my studies and the cold I have.
But now it’s time to continue with the fifth song on the album Heavy Western.
Today’s song is “Heavy Western” – the title track on the album
This song has an interesting story to it, and here you can read it:
- A few years ago I was recording some instrumental songs, and one of the tracks had an opening for a second guitarist. My manager at the time suggested to bring in Jerry Donahue since he was touring Norway. Jerry Donahue is one of the most famous guitarists in the USA, and has worked with artists such as Elton John and George Harrison. Jerry agreed to do it, and the song was recorded the following day.
- This was of course a fantastic experience for me, to watch up close one of the masters work in the studio. Despite his stardom, Jerry Donahue is one of the most down to earth and sympathetic musicians I have ever met, and he was more than happy to show me some of his techniques and licks. If this wasn’t enough, my manager made a call to NRK (Norway’s major TV network) and Dag Erik Pedersen (famous Norwegian reporter) came with his team and documented the event. The story was broadcasted on "NRK Ostafjells" the same day.
- “Heavy Western” is composed as a duel between a country guitarist and a heavy guitarist. We trade solos, but we also play together in parts of the song. The tempo is relatively fast throughout the track, but breaks down into a half-tempo, more melodic section in the middle. An incredibly challenging song to play on guitar.
What an exciting story! Just imagine getting to play with one of America’s most famous guitarists!
In this song you can easily hear the duels between a country guitarist and a heavy guitarist, and this gives an incredible dynamism to the track. It is a very cool song, that spices up your life. One of my greatest favorites on the album, which I love to listen to when I am sitting on the bus, or reading – while I dream that I good play the guitar that well…
As with “Engine Driver” I am also disappointed with the youtube version of this song – because it is not the complete version which you get with the album or the downloads. The internet version ends too quickly, and you lose the essence that makes this song so incredible good. So to get the essence you need to download the song from iTunes or Amazon, or simply buy the entire album.
Here is today’s song in the short version:
